TESOL Chile in partnership with Franklin Electronic Publishers hosted the Second Global SpellEvent Chile on Saturday 8, 2010 at Universidad Alberto Hurt ado, Santiago. The first place winner, Valentina Rojas Mercier from St.John school (Rancagua) and the second place finisher Ivan Andres Madariaga Hernandez from Verbo Divino will participate in the Global SpellEvent representing Chile that will be held in August 31, New York.

Over 40 students, ages 15 and under, participated in TESOL Chile’s SpellEvent who got qualified among hundreds who participated in within school competition. Similar competitions were held in Argentina, China, Germany, Italy, Mexico, South Korea, France, Senegal, U.A.E, Russia and Turkey.

To prepare for the SpellEvent, teachers and students were provided with a list of practice words that included pronunciations, definitions, word origins and example sentences by Franklin Electronic Publishers. The participating schools were also provided with a Franklin handheld version of Merriam-Webster's Dictionary, accompanied by a print version of Merriam-Webster's Advanced Learner's Dictionary, providing a generous supply of example sentences.

March 06, 2010 — This video shows the character, strength, and resilience of the Chilean people. Yes, we have suffered the wrath and tears of a catastrophic earthquake of calamitous proportions. In the clutch of misfortune and circumstance, we have winced - we have cried aloud. We have shown the worst - and the best - within us. Yet through it all, our faith in God and our solidarity - gives rise to hope. Even as I write these words, a national telethon is in progress. Chile helps Chile regain its vitality, our life force - Fuerza Chile! Chile rises - Chile stands again - and the Pride of a nation - humbled by Mother Nature - is restored - once again. Viva Chile! We of TESOL Chile salute you! Chile is the Master of its Fate - Chile is the Captain of its national Soul. Fuerza Chile! Viva Chile! (Thomas Baker - President - TESOL Chile - in dedication to all Chileans in recognition of our collective destiny in these difficult times)

1. Saber inglés no significa saber enseñarlo.
