Spelling Bee - TESOL Chile


TESOL Chile hosted the Second Global SpellEvent Chile in cooperation with Franklin Electronic Publishers

TESOL Chile in partnership with Franklin Electronic Publishers hosted the Second Global SpellEvent Chile on Saturday 8, 2010 at Universidad Alberto Hurt ado, Santiago. The first place winner, Valentina Rojas Mercier from St.John school (Rancagua) and the second place finisher Ivan Andres Madariaga Hernandez from Verbo Divino will participate in the Global SpellEvent representing Chile that will be held in August 31, New York.

Over 40 students, ages 15 and under, participated in TESOL Chile’s SpellEvent who got qualified among hundreds who participated in within school competition. Similar competitions were held in Argentina, China, Germany, Italy, Mexico, South Korea, France, Senegal, U.A.E, Russia and Turkey.

To prepare for the SpellEvent, teachers and students were provided with a list of practice words that included pronunciations, definitions, word origins and example sentences by Franklin Electronic Publishers. The participating schools were also provided with a Franklin handheld version of Merriam-Webster's Dictionary, accompanied by a print version of Merriam-Webster's Advanced Learner's Dictionary, providing a generous supply of example sentences.

First and second place winners from SpellEvent Chile competition were awarded an all expenses paid trip to the U.S., along with a parent or guardian, and eligibility to win the Grand Prize $10,000 scholarship at the Franklin Electronic Publishers Global SpellEvent Championship in New York City.

TESOL Chile successfully organized the first of its kind, a Spelling Bee event in a National Level. The event represents an historic milestone in language learning solutions and in making a difference through language learning.
